Plano Tamil School

Plano Tamil School was formally awarded accreditation by AdvancEd in 2015, becoming one of the first Indian Language School in Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex to receive this coveted honor from AdvancEd Accreditation Commission.

We thank the the teachers, staff, students, parents and all the well wishers of Sastha Tamil Foundation Family for their support throughout this process. The journey continues and we at Plano Tamil School are committed to ongoing excellence and continuous improvements in partnership with all key stakeholders.

Plano Tamil School was founded in 2001 with just seven students at a dining table. In 2020, we have well over 380 students in 9 Levels. Plano Tamil School is a subsidiary of Sastha Tamil Foundation (STF), a registered 501(c) 3 non-profit organization.

Plano Tamil School is a 100% volunteer run organization, with over 100 volunteers as teachers, facilitators and administrators.

Plano Tamil School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs.

Our initial goal was to get children to speak in Tamil to their parents and grandparents and to read basic signs in Tamil. To meet the specific needs of children growing up in the U.S., and to provide quality Tamil Language education to our younger generation, we tailored our own curriculum. Hence, we focused on reading, writing, speaking, and singing in Tamil. We also focus on Iyal, Isai, Nadagam (Literature, Music, & Drama). We conduct presentations every six weeks for children to practice their public speaking skills. We have yearly Annual Day performances that encourage children to speak in Tamil, and learn our Tamil culture through plays.

After we witnessed an exponential growth and demand for learning Tamil, we have started several new projects and broadened our goals. Our new vision is to empower the next generation to take Tamil to future generations.

We now have our very own Tamil library with almost 2000 Tamil books, and we encourage reading habits for our children, through the reading club. We conduct Thirukurral competitions to encourage our children to learn life lessons through our rich Tamil literature. We focus on Thirukkural, Athichudi and also conduct competitions for both children and adults in tamil speech and essay writing(katturai).

What sets us apart

We are able to provide individual attention because of our approximate 7:1 student to staff ratio. We also work with children and parents who are non-native Tamil speakers. We take extra care for special needs children. Each child is reviewed one on one, by teachers, prior to their public speaking presentations twice a year. As a result, we have improved pronunciation and articulation in verbal communication from our students. Our most unique and irreplaceable assets are our volunteers. Amongst our volunteers, we have Doctors, PhDs, Professors, Engineers, Montessori trained and Special Needs trained individuals. Their passion for Tamil , and willingness to serve is what drives Plano Tamil School and Sastha Tamil Foundation.
